Elaine

The ship rocked underneath me, but my vision kept going black with lightning strikes as I stared at him. Once again, my life was destroyed, and I’d let it happen.

The difference was that I had a baby to get back to. He needed me not to screw up his life. I refused ever to turn into my mother and escape my life because something inconvenient happened.

Sav directed me to a solarium where the floor was dark, but he flipped on lights, and I realized it had a glass bottom. During the day, fish would have been visible below.

I stepped off the glass and ignored the desire to hold him. We could never have sex again.

Once he finished putting on his pants, I said, “I should give you this ring back.”

He shook his head and stepped back. “Absolutely not.”

My body still pulsed with the feeling of him. I sighed, dropped my hands with the ring still on my finger, and said, “Maybe we can try being just friends for now. No more sex.”

He massaged the back of his head, and his ab muscles flexed. My insides were on fire as he asked, “Why?”

I swallowed and hugged my waist. I wished it was easier. “Because you’re bad news for me.”

He sat on a couch made for observing the fishes below and patted the seat next to him. “Tell you what—let’s go pick up our son? We could be at your aunt’s tomorrow and get you tucked into my penthouse while this blows over.”

Adrenaline rushed through me. I stared at the spot and then sighed. I had to be an adult and not get swept away with emotion. “You mean you get your way, and my company is destroyed.”

He shook his head and pivoted to stare at my side. “Our marriage will fix your reputation faster than anything else.”

I flinched. He’d trapped me. It wasn’t fair. I closed my eyes and pouted. “And I get nothing in return. I can’t.”

He patted my knee as if he knew I would freak out. “New plan. How about you and I do something fun in the morning?”

My plan had been to check into the hotel the day before, meet with the lawyers, as I did that afternoon, then drive back to Colorado and my son in the morning. It was the only trip I’d ever been on where I didn’t hold my son and rock him to sleep every night. I sighed. “I want to get back to Dino.”

He snapped his fingers. “We can bring him. What time does your aunt get up?”

Bring him? I pushed my hair behind my ears. “Early.”

“My plane awaits.”

Damn. He would have me back at sunrise that way, and we did need time to figure out what was going on with us. I reached out and held his arm. “Wait. I’ll call her, as I wasn’t due back till tomorrow night. If we fly, we can spend one more day together.”

He smiled, and I was enchanted by how pleasant that was to see.
